Safari West Wildlife Preserve is one of the most unusual and exciting places in Sonoma County and the only wildlife preserve in Northern California. Safari West is not a zoo or drive-through park. Tours are by appointment only. Our naturalists provide a unique 2& l/2 hour tour to each group in an authentic safari vehicle. Guests ride through the hills and plains among herds of free roaming animals. They have the most unique photo opportunities short of getting on a plane and flying to Africa. This beautiful four hundred-acre preserve in rural Santa Rosa is one of only six private facilities in all of North America that has acquired the hard to attain membership in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. The primary purpose of Safari West is wildlife conservation through breeding, education and research. One of our major goals is propagation of endangered species. Consequently, you will see a multitude of babies during your visit. Home to over 400 mammals and birds, Safari West inhabitants include zebras, giraffes, lemurs, fennec foxes, and much much more. Safari West is home to seven endangered and threatened bird species. Conservation programs are also in place for two species of Sahara Desert antelope now extinct in the wild: addax and scimitar-horned oryx.
Our tent camp, for overnight retreats, is a deluxe safari camping experience, consists of charming authentic African safari tent bungalows, each with beautiful hardwood floors. Each private tent is equipped with a sumptuous king size bed and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Guests can choose between a tent with a spectacular view overlooking a private lake or one nestled in the woods for the true bushveld experience. All tents have spacious decks for relaxing and easy access to our hiking trails. The trails wind through oak and manzanita woodlands, pen meadows and past our ponds.
The Veranda, where groups gather features outdoor barbecues, an African boma (fire pit), hand made, large finely grained wooden tables for group meetings and meals, and vine covered arbours with pleasant seating areas. Our meeting areas are outdoors and surrounded by wildlife. Meals are specially planned for your clients by our staff and cooked in our commercial kitchen or on our barbecues.
